California Receives More Than Half a Billion Dollars in Federal Funds to Improve Power Grid

Governor Newsom Announces $600 Million Grant from the Department of Energy

Project Will Support More Than 300 Direct Jobs and Enhance More Than 100 Miles of Transmission Lines

SACRAMENTO – Governor Gavin Newsom today announced that California has been awarded a $600 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to improve the state's power grid.

The grant will support the development of new clean energy resources and the expansion of battery storage capacity. These investments will help California to meet its ambitious climate change goals and ensure that the state has a reliable and resilient power grid.

"This grant is a major investment in California's clean energy future," said Governor Newsom. "These funds will help us to build a more resilient and reliable power grid that will support our growing economy and protect our environment."

The project will create more than 300 direct jobs and enhance more than 100 miles of transmission lines. It will also help to integrate more renewable energy into the grid and reduce the state's reliance on fossil fuels.

"This project is a win-win for California," said California Energy Commission Chair David Hochschild. "It will create jobs, boost our economy, and help us to meet our climate change goals."

The grant is part of the DOE's Grid Modernization Initiative, which is designed to accelerate the development of a more resilient and reliable electric grid. California is one of 12 states to receive funding through this initiative.
