Rai Benjamin Wins Gold in 400m Hurdles at Paris Olympics
American hurdler and sprinter Rai Benjamin has won his first global gold medal at the Paris Olympics.
Benjamin, 26, pulled away from his rivals over the final stretch of the rain-soaked race, finishing in a time of 46.80 seconds.
Benjamin's victory comes after a disappointing bronze finish at the previous Olympics. He is now considered one of the world's best in the 400m hurdles, and is poised to challenge world record holder Karsten Warholm at the upcoming Paris Olympics.
Benjamin's parents, Jeanette Mason and Winston Keithroy Benjamin, were on hand to witness his victory. Benjamin was born in Mount Vernon, New York, and attended Mount Vernon High School before going on to run for the University of Southern California.
Benjamin's victory is a significant moment for American track and field. He is the first American to win the gold medal in the 400m hurdles since Angelo Taylor in 2008.
