George Robert Stephanopoulos was born on February 10, 1961, in Fall River, Massachusetts. He graduated from Columbia University in 1982 with a degree in political science. Stephanopoulos began his career as a research assistant for Democratic Congressman Edward Markey.

In 1992, Stephanopoulos joined the Clinton presidential campaign as a communications director. He played a key role in the election's victory and later served as President Bill Clinton's senior advisor for policy and strategy.
