NBA Logo Replacement Movement Gains Momentum

Jerry West, Face of the NBA Logo, Passes Away

Logo Design Controversy Resurfaces

The NBA logo, featuring a silhouette of a player dribbling a basketball, has been a staple of the league for decades. However, a recent movement has emerged calling for the logo to be changed.

The logo's design dates back to 1969, when designer Alan Siegel was commissioned to create a new logo for the league. Siegel reportedly based the silhouette on Jerry West, the 14-time All-Star for the Los Angeles Lakers.

In 2010, Siegel admitted to the Los Angeles Times that West was indeed the inspiration for the logo. However, West has expressed his discomfort with the logo's widespread use, stating that he never consented to being associated with the NBA's marketing efforts.

The controversy has resurfaced following West's passing at the age of 86. Advocates of changing the logo argue that it is time for the NBA to distance itself from an image that does not represent the league's values or the wishes of the player who inspired it.
