Convert a One-Piece Rear Main Seal to a Two-Piece Rear Main Seal
Introduction
One-piece rear main seals were used on Ford 429-460 big-blocks from the late 1960s to the early 1980s. These seals are prone to failure, which can lead to oil leaks. Converting a block from a one-piece rear main seal design to the older two-piece design is relatively easy and can be done in a few hours.

- Two-piece rear main seal kit
- Rear main seal retainer gasket
- Oil pan gasket
- RTV sealant

To convert a block from a one-piece rear main seal design to a two-piece design, follow these steps:
- Remove the oil pan.
- Remove the rear main seal retainer.
- Remove the one-piece rear main seal.
- Install the two-piece rear main seal.
- Install the rear main seal retainer gasket.
- Install the oil pan gasket.
- Install the oil pan.
- Add oil to the engine.
